Signatures of distinct dynamical regimes in the energy landscape of a glass-forming liquid
Article Abstract:
The glassy state of materials at low temperatures exhibits the mechanical properties of a solid, but shows microscopic structural disorder. It is assumed that the non-exponential relaxation process is influenced by the energy landscaped linked with the structural configurations adopted by the system. Evidence of this has been obtained from computer simulations of a model glass-forming liquid. The onset of non-exponential relaxation was found to relate to a defined temperature. A sharp transition was observed when liquid is trapped in the deep energy basin.

Ins and outs of ice nucleation
Article Abstract:
A laboratory experiment is carried out to explain the process of ice formation, called contact nucleation, in which ice forms from supercooled water with surprising rapidity. This result might help in understanding aspects of ice formation in Earth's atmosphere, which in turn affects patterns of rainfall and snowfall, and the influence of clouds on the amount of solar radiation reaching Earth's surface.
