Smart but lightweight

Article Abstract:

The Technology Strategy Board will be removed from the UK Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in early 2007 and will be constituted like a research council that supports British scientific research, but will be fostering innovation in business. The Confederation of British Industry has advocated the spin-off of the Technology Strategy Board, and the Treasury's 2007 Comprehensive Spending Review will be taking care of the additional resources for innovation policy.

Alloys go with the grain

Article Abstract:

A study of the deformation of cooling alloys approves that solidifying alloys bear exciting similarities to granular materials. It is observed that after an initial near-linear increase in resistance to shear (an effect known as strain softening), the solid component rises and a decrease in the stress caused by further applied shear follows with a co-occurrence more gradual volume expansion.

Circuits of slime

Article Abstract:

A role of the fuel-cells in cleaning certain nitrogenous pollutants out of wastewater, or chewing up effluents from the digesters that convert biomass to methane on some farms is described. It is believed that all fuel-cell research invariably has to deal with the interface between microbes and the electrodes.
