South Africa reforms university funding

Article Abstract:

The South African government has issued a draft white paper on the funding of universities. This document recommends that the funding of undergraduate teaching should be determined on the basis of set subsidies per degree place in each subject. It also contains provisions for research funds to be earmarked, along with funds for assisting students and for balancing out funding between institutions. At present, there are no restrictions on student numbers, and this has led to uncontrolled growth, especially in social sciences and the arts.

AIDS drug row embroils health minister

Article Abstract:

South African Health Minister Nkosazana Zuma has become embroiled in a controversy involving unauthorized clinical trials of the AIDS drug Virodene. The country's Medicine Control Council had suspended clinical trials of Virodene since the drug's active ingredient, dimethylformamide, can cause liver damage and is carcinogenic. Reacting to criticisms that she authorized the clinical trials, Zuma claims that she merely encouraged further research on the controversial AIDS drug.
