Space physicists plead for extended solar missions

Article Abstract:

The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) may have to close down the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, GEOTAIL, WIND and POLAR solar-terrestrial spacecraft missions due to a lack of funding. Plans for extended missions have been submitted by participants in the International Solar-Terrestrial Physics Program, with the plans due to be rated in order of scientific merit. NASA will have no funding for the project after the end of fiscal year 1998. NASA could receive more funding for data analysis in the next budget, but some scientists claim the need for constant funding is crucial.

Alarm raised over drop in basic research at NASA

Article Abstract:

The Space Study Board of the National Academy of Sciences is concerned that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has provided less support for basic research into space science during the 1990s. A previous report had recommended space research moving to universities from NASA, but this does not appear to be happening. NASA spending on research increased by 44% between 1991 and 1998, and stayed at 3% of the budget of the agency, but much of this increase went to technology development and the Earth Observing System.

Saturn mission feels Congress' frustration

Article Abstract:

The international Cassini mission, to be launched in 1997 to orbit Saturn, may be cancelled in the wake of a 5% cut in NASA's budget, proposed by the US Congress on Jul 10, 1995. The mission is jointly planned by NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian space agency. There is opposition to the proposed budget plan from Europe and the US Congress. The US House Science Committee, headed by Robert Walker, recommended Cassini launch but may cancel other new projects of NASA.
