Spatial distribution of dominant animals within a group: Comparison of four statistical tests of location

Article Abstract:

Four methods for assessing and testing centrality of dominant animals for determining the spatial structure within a herd are compared. The simulation study indicated that the best test was often dependent on the particular population and less on the sample size, whereas the tests based on distance from the geometric center behaved poorly under many conditions.

Female choice based on male spatial ability and aggressiveness among meadow voles

Article Abstract:

Female preferences for males that varied in spatial ability and aggressiveness, traits likely to be selected by scramble and contest competition, respectively are tested. Results suggest that female choice and scramble competition would favour males with better spatial ability.

Resource distribution and social structure in harem-forming Old World fruit bats: variations on a polygynous theme

Article Abstract:

The formation of social groups by fruit bats (Cynopterus) which depends on the distribution of resources in the particular area is discussed. The polygamous behavior of the male bats in this context is studied.
