Speciation in the open ocean

Article Abstract:

Open ocean inhabiting species usually occupy wide distribution ranges and are accepted as monospecific due to their dispersal over great distances by the ocean currents. However localized genetic differences in a circumglobal, monotypic species of deep-sea fish, the genus Cyclothone, have now been found. This involved sequencing some of the mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA and transfer RNA genes from 41 specimens. The results show that open oceans contain genetically structured, isolated populations.

Sympatric speciation in palms on an oceanic island

Article Abstract:

Two species of palm (Arecaceae) on an oceanic island rendered clear support for sympatric speciation. It provided an opportunity for refining theoretical models on the origin of species, and new impetus for exploring putative plant and animal examples on oceanic islands.
