Spontaneous symmetry breaking in a quenched ferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensate

Article Abstract:

Spontaneous symmetry breaking in Rb spinor condensates, rapidly quenched across a quantum phase transition to a ferromagnetic state, is studied. The formation of spin textures and ferromagnetic domains and domain walls are observed and the phase sensitive in-situ detection of spin vortices, the topological defects resulting from the symmetry breaking, is demonstrated.

Creation of ultracold molecules from a Fermi gas of atoms

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that the small binding energy of the ultracold (sup)40K(sub)2 molecules is controlled by detuning the magnetic field away from the Feshbach resonance. The weakly bound molecules are detected by their radio-frequency photodissociation spectra, which analyze molecular wavefuntion and quantitate binding energies consistent with theory.

Emergence of a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate from a fermi gas

Article Abstract:

The direct observation of a molecular Bose-Eienstein condensate created solely by adjusting the interaction strength in an ultra-cold Fermi gas of atoms is reported. This state of matter represents one extreme of the predicted Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) - Bose-Einstein (BC) continuum.
