Stable isotope evidence for the food web consequences of species invasions in lakes

Article Abstract:

It has been established that the use of stable isotopes can give time-integrated and energy-based depictions of food-web structure. In this research, stable isotope ratios were used to assess the food-web repercussions of the invasion of smallmouth bass and rockbass into Canadian lakes. This work supports other research showing that subsidies of resources from other systems or habitats can be both energetically significant and important in food-web dynamics.

Herbivore-infested plants selectively attract parasitoids

Article Abstract:

Plants synthesize and emit volatile compounds from their tissues in response to insect herbivory. Chemical and behavioural assays have been used to show that such emissions can transmit herbivore-specific information than can be detected by parasitic wasps. This indicates a more sophisticated interaction between plants and natural enemies of the herbivores that attack them, than was previously thought.
