Star-gazing funds should come down to Earth
Article Abstract:
There is considerable evidence to support the view that funding for ground-based optical/infrared telescopes should be increased, while funding for space-based astronomical observatories should not. The high costs of the Hubble Space Telescope, for example, have not yet been justified, despite the annual write-off of capital costs. Overall, the balance of funding between capital and annual operational costs differs considerably between ground- and space-based facilities.

Dorothy Hill (1907-97): Geologist with a passion for ancient corals, and the first woman to reach the pinnacles of Australian science
Article Abstract:
Dorothy Hill was, in turn, a student, teacher, administrator and benefactor of the University of Queensland in Brisbane. She was first influenced towards geology as a first year undergraduate and was particularly interested in palaeontology. Her work with Australian fossil coral faunas established her as the pre-eminent worker in the field. The scale of her contributions is widely understood by scientists.
