Superconductivity enhanced by Hg fission
Article Abstract:
Scientists demonstrate a solution to problems inherent in copper-oxide which have inhibited successful high-temperature superconductivity. The material has easy motion of magnetic vortices which produces finite electrical resistance preventing loss-free current conduction. The scientists use a mercury/copper oxide superconductor and produce columnar defects, which counteract easy vortex motion in the copper oxide, by applying a proton beam to induce nuclear fission in the mercury atoms.

Room-temperature ferromagnetic nanotubes controlled by electron or hole doping
Article Abstract:
A description on the nanotubes of vanadium oxide [VO(sub x)] formed by controllable self-assembly, that are ferromagnetic at room temperature is presented. The as-formed nanotubes are transformed from spin-frustrated semiconductors to ferromagnetic by doping with either electrons or holes, potentially offering a route to spin control in nanotube-based heterostructures.

Stable ultrahigh-density magneto-optical recordings using introduced linear defects
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the occurrence of linear defects in magnetic thin film and the resultant strain they impose upon it. The storage of data on magnetic media at densities over 1 Tbit inch-2 is discussed.
