Synthesis of layered LiMnO2 as an electrode for rechargeable lithium batteries
Article Abstract:
LiMnO2 which is similar in structure to LiCoO2 is a good positive electrode for rechargeable batteries. The charge capacity of LiMnO2 is similar to that of LiCoO2 though the cost of using manganese in place of Co is less than 1% that of cobalt and is less toxic. Layered LiMnO2 is prepared by ion exchange from NaMnO2, in an anhydrous form. NaMnO2 is prepared from stoichiometric amounts of Na2CO3 and manganese (III) oxide at 700 to 730 degree celsius for 18-72 hours under flowing argon. Refluxing NaMnO2 with large quantities of LiCl or LiBr.

A manganese oxyiodide cathode for rechargeable lithium batteries
Article Abstract:
A new manganese oxide cathode, oxyiodide Li1.5Na0.5MnO2.85I0.12, has been designed and manufactured. The device has good cycling features and operates with a high reversible capacity of 260 mA hg-1 at between 1.5 and 4.3 volts. It will serve well in compact lightweight battery designs because of its high energy density. Further research will establish its relative usefulness in the avoidance of lattice distortions.
