Tainted academics: eastern Germany is making needless heavy weather over the status of academics

Article Abstract:

Universities in eastern Germany must reform their procedures for dealing with academics and researchers who attained their positions under the former Communist regime. The universities are now firing any academic deemed to have benefited unfairly from Communist patronage. These discharged employees must then contest their dismissals legally if they wish to regain their positions. This vindictive process will do nothing to dispel the malice now pervading German universities. An academic's standing with his or her colleagues is the only just criterion for judgment.

Universities seek to atone for Nazi past

Article Abstract:

Rostock University, Germany, is to search through its records to identify the names of people who had their academic qualifications removed for racial reasons by the Nazis. This follows growing openness among universities in western Germany about their activities during the Nazi era. There is a general lack of awareness among universities in eastern Germany about this issue. Furthermore, many lack the resources to undertake the detailed investigatory work required.

Wanted: A free rein for Germany's universities

Article Abstract:

Universities in Germany have stood out as the last bastion against change, but moves by the University Rectors' Conference (HRK) recommending the creation of short-term professorships and pushing for performance related pay are seen as a way forward. Universities need to become more independent and use opportunities to establish competition for resources, and in under-subscribed courses such as chemistry and physics they should be able to seek the best.
