Temperature terrestrial vertebrate faunas in North and South America: interplay of ecology, evolution, and geography wit biodiversity

Article Abstract:

A comparative study of terrestrial vertebrate species richness for two analogous montane areas critical for biodiversity conservation, the Greater Yellowstone region of the Rocky Mountains, United States and the Nahuel Huapi region, Patagonia, around Bariloche, Argentina was done to identify the factors that govern species richness in biological preserves. Results of the studies suggest that efforts to manage biodiversity will benefit from taking into account the resources that are restricted to the landscape of interest and geographical context.

Defining units of conservation for intraspecific biodiversity: reply to Dimmick et al

Article Abstract:

The evolutionarily significant unit (ESU) concept to define units of conservation fails to identify and protect all levels of intraspecific biodiversity. It is understood that the primary challenges to the effective conservation of biodiversity are social, economical and political.

Quantifying biodiversity: a phenotypic perspective

Article Abstract:

An algorithm is derived to calculate the relative phylogenetic distinctiveness of taxa with respect to patterns of phylogenetic branching. The analysis helps to prioritize species based conservation efforts.
