The Saga of the saiga; an ancient antelope survives on the Russian steppes

Article Abstract:

Political stability is the critical factor in the preservation of the Saiga tatarica antelope who range in Kalmykia, west of the Volga River on the Russian steepes. The Chernye Zemlye Biosphere Reserve was established in 1990 and many would like to see it managed for saiga. A commercial hunt and sale of wild hay harvested from the steppe area helps it pay for itself.

On the road to Choibalsan

Article Abstract:

The Mongolian government allows citizens to annually harvest 10,000 gazelles, yet illegal commercial hunting is responsible for killing over 100,000 gazelles every year. The camels, sheep, goats, horses and cattle raised domestically could pass diseases to the gazelle population.
