The Trans-Gulf Express
Article Abstract:
Gary Noel Ross, a butterfly specialist from Baton Rouge, LA, has studied monarch butterflies in their annual migration from North America to central Mexico. Generally, the butterflies fly during the daytime and avoid bodies of water. However, Ross has observed them alighting on off-shore gas rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. He has concluded that they are attracted by the bright yellow color of the rigs, thinking it is goldenrod. Because they use the rigs as way stations during their migration, their flights are shorter and less perilous.
