The baking of layer cakes
Article Abstract:
The electrodeposition method is effective in creating multilayers of virtually pure metals. Cobalt-platinum and copper-nickel multilayers are efficiently produced by applying step-changes to the potential difference of an electrolytic bath with two metal cations. The giant magnetoresistance along thin wires has also been achieved using wires made by electrodeposition. Multilayers are useful for computer memories, reflecting extreme ultra-violet rays and X-rays, and the generation of high elastic moduli.

A precious stone that isn't
Article Abstract:
Mintek of South Africa, produces jewellery featuring a new precious 'stone'. The 'stones' actually consist of the intermetallic compound AuA1(sub2). Its crystal structure was determined as far back as 1934 and its intense purple colour has been interpreted in terms of electronic structure. It has fascinated metallurgists for some time and was first reported by W.C. Roberts-Austen.

Melting from within
Article Abstract:
Research investigating the process of melting in solids is presented. Particular attention is given to computer simulations examining solids' melting processes, including the initiation of melting by instabilities in local lattice.
