The buzz about pollination
Article Abstract:
The vibration of the buzz of the bees in the nightshades' flowers with reflexed petals and stamens forming a projecting conical mass causes pollen dispersal. The pollen release is dependent on the force the bees exert on the stamens by accelerating their vibration, and is independent of the buzz frequence. The plants regulate the release of pollen by gradual drying of the pollen. This ensures that the pollen is distributed to many bees and only a fraction is collected by each bee. The recurved petals and the pendent habit in these flowers may be helpful in the slow drying and buzz-pollination.

A leaf for all seasons
Article Abstract:
Leaves develop different morphological and biochemical features in response to variations in climate. The microclimate surrounding a tree may vary enough by location to produce different types of leaves in the upper and lower regions of the tree. Such variations occur with time as well as location, with more water-efficient leaves appearing prior to the dry season. Such observations raise inter-related questions about paleoclimate and about the evolution of such heterophylly.

Mystery of moribund marram
Article Abstract:
Sand dunes are difficult habitats where some plants become moribund as the conditions get better. Factors which led to the demise of the marram grass in the sand dunes of Lake Huron, Canada, were determined. The role of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi has been given particular attention. Marram grass has been considered a model species on vegetation succession. It has also become economically important in land reclamation and protection.
