The complexity of co-dependency

Article Abstract:

The amount of biomass produced by a simple aquatic ecosystem is determined by the diversity of both producers and decomposers. The relationship between producers and decomposers is not straightforward. It was established that bacteria from systems with high productivity can use a wider variety of carbon sources than bacteria from systems with lower productivity. The ability of bacteria from a microcosm to use a range of carbon sources rose with rising algal diversity. This suggests that ecosystem productivity may be connected with the cycling of carbon or other nutrients.

Productivity-biodiversity relationships depend on the history of community assembly

Article Abstract:

Assembling aquatic microbial communities at five productivity levels using four assembly sequences, productivity-species diversity relationships are tested. The result suggests that the history of community assembly should be added to the growing list of factors that influence productivity-biodiversity patterns.

Biodiversity's ups and downs

Article Abstract:

Possible influences on levels of biodiversity in different ecosystems are discussed. One factor which is thought to help determine biodiversity is the amount of available energy, but this is as yet unproven.
