Retention of social recognition after hibernation in Belding's ground squirrels
Article Abstract:
Belding's ground squirrels were studied for retention of social memory during hibernation. Prior to hibernation young ground squirrels discriminated between odours of familiar and unfamiliar individuals, but did not respond differentially the following spring. However female and male yearlings continued to discriminate between odours of littermates and familiar non littermates.

The nature and representation of individual recognition odours in Belding's ground squirrels
Article Abstract:
Spermophilus beldingi ground squirrels use scent from dorsal, pedal, anal, and oral glands and also from their ears for social recognition. Research indicates that they are able to distinguish individuals, and that prior familiarity with individuals is not necessary for this process.

The development of alarm-call response behaviour in free-living juvenile Belding's ground squirrels
Article Abstract:
The responses of free-living juvenile Belding's ground squirrels to alarm-calls develop from natal emergence until the age of dispersal. Discrimination to playbacks of three alarm calls, juvenile squeals and wren song was absent at emergence but developed after five days. Responses to whistle alarm calls associated with fast-moving predators also develop earlier than responses to trill alarm calls of slow-moving predators.
