The effect of sedimentary cover on the flexural strength of continental lithosphere

Article Abstract:

Factors that affect the crustal strength of continents include geothermal gradient, rheology, strain rate and plate curvature. Research on this subject has involved developing a semi-analytical model of effective elastic thickness (EET) through a parametrization of the yield stress envelope that takes into account the impact of crust-mantle decoupling. It was possible to show that sediment fill is very significant as parameter controlling flexural strength at continents.

A mechanism to thin the continental lithosphere at magma-poor margins

Article Abstract:

A demonstration that crustal thinning could be accomplished in extensional environments by a system of conjugate concave downward faults instead of multiple normal faults is presented. Initial decoupling of upper crustal deformation from lower crustal and mantle deformation by progressive weakening of the middle crust is an essential requirement to reproduce the observed rift evolution.

Modes of faulting at mid-ocean ridges

Article Abstract:

The most common tectonic feature on the surface of the Earth is the abyssal-hill-bounding faults that pervade the oceanic crust. The observation of these faults as of April 2005 shows a large range of fault sizes and orientations.
