The elephant in the room

Article Abstract:

A panel was convened in Britain to answer in the wake of the trial of TGN1412 - an antibody aimed at treating autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis that put six men in intensive care at London's Northwick Park Hospital in March 2006. TGN1412, which was intended to bypass one of the cellular checks blocking the activation of a certain class of T cell, was successful in monkey, but it induced a storm of inflammatory molecules that led to widespread inflammation and organ failure in humans.

Recognition of Bacterial glycosphingolipids by natural killer T cells

Article Abstract:

Natural killer T (NKT) cells constitute a highly conserved T lymphocyte subpopulation that has the potential to regulate many types of immune responses through the rapid secretion of cytokines. NKT cells are activated in vivo after exposure to the bacterial antigens or bacteria.

Regulations of immunity by self-reactive T cells

Article Abstract:

Self-reactive cells pose an immediate threat of autoimmunity. The evidence suggests that the CD25(super +)T cells are self reactive and this property plays an essential role in the commitment to a T(sub R-) cell lineage.
