The germ of the issue

Article Abstract:

The production of germ cells in Drosophila embryos depends on the level of oskar gene product. Researchers Anne Ephrussi and Ruth Lehmann, by inducing the mislocalization of oskar RNA to the anterior end of embryos, confirmed that oskar can produce ectopic germ-cells. This finding represents a significant advance in the field of cell-fate specification and pattern formation. However, further research is needed to find out if ectopic germ plasm has the granules ordinarily observed in the posterior germ plasm.

Drosophila wingless generates cell type diversity among engrailed expressing cells

Article Abstract:

Input from wingless-expressing cells (wg) regulates the diversification of the engrailed-expressing cells (en) during embryogenesis of the fly Drosophila. Wg, which is known to generate the smooth cuticle cells, also assists in determining whether en will generate smooth cells or first row denticle cells. Wg first causes en to retain its genetic expression in the early phase of embryonic development and then to diversify during the later stages.
