The importance of behavioural studies in conservation biology

Article Abstract:

Animal behavioral studies have not contributed much to conservation biology despite exciting research developments in the field. There are 20 areas where the study of animal behavior can help conservation. Such areas include small population extinction, inbreeding depression, species isolation, fragmentation, environmental change, predation, cultural skills, behavioral manipulation, release schemes, habitat requirements, reserve areas, captive breeding, reproduction, habitat preferences, stressful conditions, census techniques, exploitation, human population, discounting and conservation.

Matching of acoustic features during the vocal exchange of coo calls by Japanese macaques

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to test whether Japanese macaques that respond vocally match the acoustic features of their reply to those of the calls they have heard. Each subject female was presented with a set of stimuli characterized by six or eight coo calls witt a frequency between 0.3 and 8 KHz. Results showed that the frequency range of response calls from the start of the maximum frequency was influenced by those of the playback stimuli for most of the subjects.
