The logger and the tiger: in a remote valley in Russia's Far East, the Siberian tiger and the timber industry face off in what may be the rare cat's last stand

Article Abstract:

The last wild population of Siberian tigers in Russia is being threatened by the country's need for hard currency now that price supports have been lifted. Poaching has increased and the area's old-growth forests, the tiger's habitat, may be harvested and sold. Female tigers require from 125 to 250 square miles of habitat; males need from 500 to 620 square miles. In addition, the region does not have the financial resources to effectively deter poaching. The tigers' habitat is in the Sikhote-Alin mountain range in the Ussuriland region of Russia.
