The origin of the internal nostril of tetrapods

Article Abstract:

The choana, a unique internal nostril opening from the nasal sac into the roof of the mouth, is a key part of the tetrapod respiratory system. It was the first component of the tetrapod body plan to evolve, well before the origin of limbs, and is therefore crucial to the understanding of the beginning of the fish-tetrapod transition.

A primitive fish provides key characters bearing on deep osteichthyan phylogeny

Article Abstract:

The study of deep osteichthyan phylogeny with the help of a primitive fossil fish, Meemannia, is presented. Meemannia provides key characters for studying deep osteichthyan phylogeny and indicates a possible morphotype for the common ancestor of actinopterygians and sarcopterygians.

A primitive sarcopterygian fish with an eyestalk

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the discovery of a basal sarcopterygian fish which provides evidence of the evolutionary path of two osteichthyan fossils from Australia and China which date from the Early Devonian period.
