The role of mat-forming diatoms in the formation of Mediterranean sapropels

Article Abstract:

An electron-microscope investigation of a late Quaternary laminated diatomaceous sapropel in the deepest part of the moat of the Napoli mud volcano on the Mediterranean ridge has been linked with recent progress in the understanding of the ecology of mat-forming diatoms to create a model of the formation of organic-carbon-rich sapropels. It is clear that diatoms played a key role in sapropel formation. Evidence of high diatom production has often been interpreted as upwelling-related, but a study of the diatoms involved indicates an alternative explanation, with diatoms growing under conditions of sustained seasonal stratification.

Climate and the conveyor

Article Abstract:

Three separate oceanic studies have established that the operations of the Atlantic Ocean's conveyor belt underwent rapid and recurring changes during the last glaciation. Results also suggest a correlation between changes in the operations of the Atlantic conveyor and climatic changes. The instability and erratic behavior of the Atlantic's conveyor as suggested by the results is consistent with the results achieved by simulations. Possible causes for the discrepancies in the results of the three studies are discussed.

Early Oligocene initiation of North Atlantic deep water formation

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the extent of the Southeast Faeroes drift which has been shown to extend for 120-kilometers in a direction parallel to the Faeroe-Shetland basin. The onset of deposition in the Oligocene epoch is discussed.
