Article Abstract:

The pigment producing cells in the skin melanocytes have a master regulator called MITF (for 'microphthalmia-associated transcription factor'). The factor is required for committing immature cells to the melanocyte lineage during development and is intimately involved in decision regarding cell survival, growth and specialization.

Melanocyte biology and skin pigmentation

Article Abstract:

The regulation of pigmentation at the molecular level and the role of tanning in protecting against damage and skin cancer are discussed. The contributions of melanocyte to skin biology might provide new avenues in preventing and treating skin diseases.

Neonatal sunburn and melanoma in mice

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the use of retrospective epidemiological data which suggests that severe exposure to the sun in neonatal mice will result in melanoma formation in later life. The implications for sunburn in children are discussed.
