The worm revealed

Article Abstract:

The Caenorhabditis elegans Genome Project started in 1983, and the project later sought to obtain the complete genome sequence of the worm. This sequencing has been described as essentially complete, and has yielded the largest genome sequenced to date, and the first genome sequence for a multicellular organism. This project shows that complex genomes can be sequenced, and provides a model for genome efforts.

The genome sequence of Rickettsia prowazekii and the origin of mitchondria

Article Abstract:

The entire genome sequence of the Rickettsia prowazekii intracellular parasite which causes epidemic typhus. The genome consists of 834 protein-coding genes that show similarities to those of mitochondrial genes. The R. prowazekii genome has the highest proportion of non-coding DNA so far seen in a microbial genome, suggesting that it has much closer links to mitochondria than any other microbe investigated.

A plastic genome

Article Abstract:

Nurminsky and colleagues have demonstrated plasticity in the Drosophila genome, identifying a gene encoding a sperm-specific axonemal dynein intermediate chain. It is shown tot have evolved rapidly in the lineage leading to D. melanogaster. The new Sdic gene is unique because of the identified putative function, and genetic variability is reduced.
