Time for a firm grasp on UK science priorities: the Labour party is expected to win the election in the United Kingdom next week, but it has so far provided little to inspire researchers
Article Abstract:
A change in government in the UK is likely after the May 2, 1997 elections, and a Labour administration has promised to put science 'at the heart of government'. However the UK's technological industrial base still cannot compete internationally, and the government will need to develop a transdepartmental science policy. It will need to concentrate resources on the most productive areas of science and it will be under pressure to raise social accountability in research.
