Trace element signature of subduction-zone fluids, melts and supercritical liquids at 120-180 km depth
Article Abstract:
Direct-laser-ablation inductive-coupled-plasma mass spectrometry measurements of the composition of fluids and melts equilibrated with a basaltic eclogite at pressures equivalent to depths in the Earth of 120-180 km and temperatures of 700-1,200 degree Celsius is reported. Results show that at pressures equivalent to 180 km depth, a supercritical liquid with melt-like solubilities for the investigated trace elements is observed, even at low temperatures.

Dating topography of the Sierra Nevada, California, using apatite (U-Th)/He ages
Article Abstract:
A technique to estimate the age of topographic relief using the ages of apatites determined from uranium, thorium and helium content is described. The results from the sierra Nevada, California, suggest that the sierra developed an Andean size topography between 185 Myr and 70-80 Myr. This coincided with crustal thickening. A gradual reduction of mean crestal elevation is inferred.
