Transcriptional transgressions
Article Abstract:
The exact process by which transcription factors initiate and control the transcribing of genetic information by eukaryotic RNA polymerases has become uncertain. Results published by five research groups have cast doubt on what had been three firmly established principles governing the process: that each RNA polymerase controls a unique set of transcription factors, that each such factor carries out both a unique function and a 'universal' function needed by all promoters of that class.

Transcription activation in cells lacking TAF(sub II)s
Article Abstract:
The transcription of many genes takes place in the absence of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae transcription factor, TATA box-binding protein associated factor (yTAF(sub II)) complex. Transcriptional activation is unaffected by the loss or inactivation of six yTAF (sub II)s. This indicates the presence of some substance that is the target of transcriptional activators. The yTAF (sub II) is functionally and structurally similar to the higher eukaryotic general transcriptional factor TFIID.

A human nucleoporin-like protein that specifically interacts with HIV Rev
Article Abstract:
A human Rev interacting protein (hRIP) has been cloned which appears to serve an essential function in the nucleocytoplasmic transport necessary for HIV-1 RNA replication. Rev is involved in the nuclear export of partly- and unspliced viral RNAs and over expression of hRIP in the presence of Rev increased this function while other similar viruses were not affected by hRIP.
