Tropically transmitted parasites and the conservation of small populations: raccoon roundworm and the imperiled Allegheny woodrat

Article Abstract:

Allegheny woodrat are reintroduced into four historically occupied sites with varying natural levels of environmental contamination with B. procyonis eggs to test the hypothesis that B. procyonis, an intestinal nematode of raccoons, contributed to the extirpation of Allegheny woodrat from the northern parts of its range. It is concluded that trophically transmitted parasites can be significant sources of mortality in intermediate host populations.
