Turning of nerve growth cones induced by localized increases in intracellular calcium ions

Article Abstract:

There is evidence for the existence of multiple levels of intracellular regulation of directed growth cone extension. This research has found that a direct, spatially restricted elevation of intracellular CA2+ concentration, [Ca2+]i, on one side of the growth cone by focal laser-induced photolysis of caged Ca2+ consistently prompts turning of the growth cone to the side with raised [Ca2+]i (attraction). Direct focal elevation of [Ca2+]i on one side of the growth cone is sufficient to spark off both attractive and repulsive turning of the growth cone. There is direct evidence that a localized rise in [Ca2+]i at the growth cone can supply the directional growth signal for growth cone extension.

Calcium's double punch

Article Abstract:

Studies reveal that the enzyme calcineurin has an unidentified function, which is activated by the sperm-induced calcium ions surge and is important for overcoming the meiotic arrest.
