Two sets of human-tropic pig retrovirus
Article Abstract:
Two different classes of porcine endogenous proviruses (PERVs) that can infect human cells have been found in the PK15 pig kidney cell line and in a range of normal porcine tissues. Research aimed at establishing which PERVs can infect human cells involved cloning this region from the proviruses expressed by PK15 cells using primers from the well conserved pol-RT region of PERV. It was found that both classes of PERV are inherited in a range of pig breeds. PERV-A proviruses are present at between 10 and 23 copies and PERV-B between seven and 12 copies.

Sensitization of cells and retroviruses to human serum by (alpha-1-3) galactosyltransferase
Article Abstract:
Cells and retroviruses produced by the expression of porcine (alpha-1-3) galactosyltransferase in human cells are still somewhat sensitive to human serum. Human serum inactivates mammalian C-type retroviruses, but retroviruses produced from human cells are resistant to inactivation. Human serum contains antibodies targetted against carbohydrates on retroviral envelopes. Gal(alpha-1-3)gal terminal carbohydrates are absent in humans, even though they are expressed by other mammals.

Positional cloning of the mouse retrovirus restriction gene Fv1
Article Abstract:
Cloning of the mouse retrovirus restriction gene, Friend-virus-susceptibility-1 (Fv1), shows the gene to be derived from the gag region of an endogenous retrovirus unrelated to murine leukaemia virus. This indicates that the Fv1 protein and its target share functional similarities even though nucleotide-sequence homology is absent. The Fv1 gene delays spontaneous or experimentally-induced viral tumours.
