US bioethics panel poised to judge local review boards
Article Abstract:
The newly established National Bioethics Advisory Commission is likely to initially tackle the oversight of local ethics boards, which supervise research protocols themselves. Within one year, the 17-member commission should report on measures necessary to protect humans utilized as research subjects in the US, as part of its first task of assessing the protection of research subjects. Other bioethics issues on which it will report to the Clinton administration and Congress are privacy of genetic information, protection of individuals from discrimination owing to such data and patenting of human genes.

Seismologists claim quake data being 'mis-read' as bomb test
Article Abstract:
The US government's refusal to state whether it believes that a seismic event which took place in northern Russia on Aug 16, 1997, was a nuclear test or an earthquake has angered leading US seismologists. They believe that data obtained from seismic stations in Finland, Russia and Norway clearly indicate that the event was an earthquake, rather than an explosion. They feel that the government has handled this incident very badly.
