US biologists propose launch of electronic preprint archive

Article Abstract:

A group of US scientists, led by Patrick Brown a researcher at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Stanford University School of Medicine, and David Lipman, director of the US National Council for Biotechnology INformation (NCBI), are planning to establish an e-print archive. This would come under a single website with papers being posted, archived and distributed automatically. The archives could benefit from direct indexing and linking through NCBI's PubMed database.

ESA faces economies to pay for Ariane launch failure

Article Abstract:

European Space Agency (ESA) officials disclosed that the Ariane-5's failed maiden launch will not only delay the program by a year but will increase its cost by some $362 million as well. They stated that the additional cost will have to be taken out of existing budgets and other ESA programs. Investigators looking into the Ariane-5's explosion believe that software errors caused the rocket to veer of course and break up.
