US increases health funds but ducks AIDS allocation
Article Abstract:
Pres. Bill Clinton has approved a $12.7 billion FY 1997 spending package for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), up 6.9% from the level seen in 1996. However, controversy has surfaced over provisions concerning the NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR). The new budget law allows the OAR to determine how much money is to be spent on AIDS but it is silent as to how much of NIH money can be allocated for such efforts. The 1993 law which established the OAR's current powers requires the NIH budget to specify how much money should be spent on AIDS research.

Financial doubts over future of chimp lab
Article Abstract:
Some observers believe that the Coulston Foundation of Alamogordo, NM, could face serious financial difficulties following the loss of two National Institutes of Health contracts to house HIV-infected chimps and undertake AIDs vaccine research on them. However, the foundation itself denies that it has financial problems, emphasizing that it plans to bid for a new contract. It currently receives $8.8 million between 1995 and 2000 from the National Center for Research Resources under the National Chimpanzee Breeding and Research Programme.

NIH institute limits scope of 'AIDS research.'
Article Abstract:
The National Cancer Institute's decision to tighten the definition of AIDS-related research and allot more money for extramural work aims at overcoming future objections by Congressional Republicans. The decision follows two critical reports on the institute's AIDS research activities. The AIDS research has been reclassified into three categories.
