US senators urge caution on cloning ban

Article Abstract:

Some US congressmen are urging their colleagues to avoid a 'knee-jerk reaction' to human cloning despite the initial surge of support for the new discovery. These reactions stem from an announcement made in Feb 1997 that a sheep had been cloned. The National Bioethics Advisory Commission, a panel assembled by Pres Clinton to draw up policy recommendations on human cloning, has heard diverse views about human cloning. Some of the senators who have voiced their opposition to the discovery include Patrick Johnston, John Porter, Connie Mack and Bill Frist. Even Pres Clinton has banned federal funding for the cloning of human beings.

NCI apologizes for fallout study delay

Article Abstract:

THe US National Cancer Institute has apologized for a delay in the releasing of preliminary findings of an American fallout study. The study, to investigate Americans' exposure to radioactive iodine during nuclear tests in the 1950s, was ordered by Congress in 1982 but no plan was put in place to publicize the information, a summary of which was only released in August 1997. The findings suggest that some 750,0000 adults may develop thyroid cancer as a direct result of the tests.

Bid to limit prices on drugs using 'public' discoveries

Article Abstract:

The US government is trying to restrict pharmaceutical companies when pricing products developed using public money. Industry representatives are furious about the government proposals. Biotechnology companies who produce results after working on government programmes should be rewarded for their efforts, say critics. Private organizations should not make a disproportionate amount of profit from government research, say government supporters.
