US universities find that demand for botanists exceeds supply

Article Abstract:

Many US universities are hoping to establish a strong position in biodiversity research in the 21st century. For this reason, they are seeking to recruit plant systematists, who undertake a range of research, including biodiversity and genetically engineered crops. Demand for plant systematists, who have traditionally found it hard to gain academic employment, is now exceeding supply. Some observers feel that it is now time to consider raising the number of trained plant systematists, particularly those with molecular biology abilities, to balance supply and demand.

Decoding our cousins

Article Abstract:

Researchers are interested in unearthing fresh bones of Neanderthals that might yield intact DNA and genetic material, and scientists are planning an entire Neanderthal genome sequence based on discoveries of DNA segments in old bones, so as to examine their relationship to modern humans. But, specimens are difficult to study due to the rarity of Neanderthal caves and also due to the French government's reluctance to provide permission to excavate the Moula-Guercy cave for specimens.

Bioprospects less than golden

Article Abstract:

The convention on biological Diversity is agreed at Rio as a framework that would help the world's biological resources to be utilized in a controlled and prudent way. According to the bioprospecting advocates, one reason for the low level of interest of large companies is the lack of a firm framework for benefit sharing between host nations, scientist and commercial companies.
