Unveiling the limitations of scat surveys to monitor social species: A case study on river otters

Article Abstract:

The correlation between the production of sites with feces (for example, latrines) and river otters (Lontra canadensis) population was studied to determine if scat surveys were sufficient for supervising relative population size for species leaving signs in a clumped distribution on the landscape. It was found that presence of latrine abundance failed to reflect the otter population for the given area as the relationship was nonlinear and reached a plateau.

Hunter and nonhunter beliefs about chronic wasting disease in Wisconsin

Article Abstract:

A study comparing the beliefs about chronic wasting disease and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource's program for the management of the disease between landowners who hunt and do not hunt is presented. Results show that most nonhunting landowners were neutral and not concerned about the chronic wasting disease and its management.

Biopsying southern right whales: Their reactions and effects on reproduction

Article Abstract:

Results of 906 biopsy attempts on southern right whales in South African waters between 1995 and 1997 including 147 cow-calf pairs are presented. It is suggested that any prohibition on the biopsy sampling of cow-calf pairs should be carefully reconsidered in the light of the variable genetic insights that sampling could achieve.
