Use of warm-season food plots by white-tailed deer
Article Abstract:
The diet of white-tailed deer on the South Texas Plains varies in nutritional quality and composition, depending upon the season. It has been suggested that planting food plots will compensate for seasonal deficiencies in native vegetation. A new study is designed to test the theory that the use of food plots by deer is unrelated to the nutritional quality and availability of natural forages. The study shows that greater use of the food plots did not correspond to the nutritional carrying capacity of the habitat.

Nutrient enrichment, tannins, and thorns: Effects on browsing of shrub seedlings
Article Abstract:
Blackbrush acacia and guajillo forms the major diet of white-tailed deer in southern Texas and northern Mexico. Field and greenhouse experiments are conducted to test if fertilization reduces tannins and spinescence, thorn removal increases utilization of shrub seedlings by deer and fertilization alters seedling nutrient content, chemical composition, and growth characteristics.
