Virulent strains of Toxoplasma gondii comprise a single clonal lineage
Article Abstract:
Genetic analysis of 28 strains of the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) showed that the 10 disease-causing strains have about the same genotype while the remaining nonvirulent strains are slightly polymorphic. These findings indicate that the virulent varieties of T. gondii derived from one lineage that has retained genetic homogeneity in spite of the organism's global dispersal and capacity to reproduce sexually. T. gondii, a serious parasite of wild and domestic animals, has also emerged in recent years as a cause of opportunistic infections in human AIDS patients.

ESR on a single molecule
Article Abstract:
Researchers lead by J. Kohler and J. Wrachtrup have successfully obtained the electron magnetic resonance of a single molecule embedded in a pentacene crystal using fluorescence detected electron-spin-resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. In their respective experiments, certain molecules which have been excited by light went into a low-energy triplet state through the intersystem crossing process and stayed there long enough to be probed. The ESR transitions in the molecule was then detected using the optical fluorescence.
