Visibility bias in aerial surveys relating to nest success of Arctic geese

Article Abstract:

Annual aerial observations of white-fronted and Canada geese were conducted near Walker Bay, Northwest Territories, Canada, between 1986 to 1992 to study their population size. The surveys, which were done during their first week of incubation, revealed wide variations in the population estimates of each species. This was due to decreased visibility of nesting geese and the rise in nest success which, in turn, was caused by behavioral changes.

Measurement error in aerial surveys of osprey productivity

Article Abstract:

The reliability of aerial observations of ospreys in determining the population size of ospreys was investigated between 1992-93. Specifically, two observers conducted independent chick counts from fixed- and rotor-wing aircraft over two sites in Lake Huron, MI. The surveys showed that chick counts made from rotor-wing aircraft by both observers closely matched the actual number of chicks.

Mercury concentration in tissues of Osprey from the Carolinas, USA

Article Abstract:

The concentrations of mercury in tissues of 39 Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) were analyzed from coastal counties of South Carolina. Results concluded that high concentration of mercury was found in their livers and kidneys whereas in feathers it was found to be low.
