White-light velocimetry

Article Abstract:

A new method for the measurement of remote velocity that finds applications in meteorology, medicine, law enforcement and engineering has been developed. Powerful and inexpensive broadband incoherent illumination radiation sources are used to replace coherent quasi-monochromatic sources of illumination, allowing the technique to be used effectively in remote-target velocimetry. Radiation's ability to record a Doppler shift in frequency when reflected off a moving object is the principle used in the design of a white-light velocimeter.

Nanotubes see the light

Article Abstract:

A photosensitive dye is incorporated into a single-walled carbon nanotube so that its electrical conductivity can be controlled by light. This synthesis technique will immobilize different dyes onto the nanotubes, thus allowing the tuning both of the wavelengths that initiate the photoisomerization and the magnitude of the switching, independently of the nanotube's electronic structure.
