Why thumbs are up?
Article Abstract:
Wnt-7a protein is involved in a network of signalling factors which are responsible for limb growth and patterning in all three axes, proximal-distal, anterior-posterior and dorsal, ventral, as revealed by studies of limb patterning and growth. The role of a dorsalizing signal in apical ectodermal ridge activity and gene expression in the zone of polarizing activity is discussed. Molecular analyses also revealed that vertebrates and insect limb development is similar.

Too much sex is bad for males
Article Abstract:
Many species depend on chromosome-based systems to initiate the differences between males and females. Carmi, Kopcyznski and Meyer have identified an X-linked gene encoding a protein, SEX-1, related to nuclear-hormone receptors, which represses xol-1 transcription. A genetic screen was devised to seek regulators of xol-1, and it is shown that SEX-1 is mostly required zygotically to repress just the sex-specific transcription of xol-1.

Living with bad architecture
Article Abstract:
Mutations in the gene encoding of HMGI-C, an architectural transcription factor, appear responsible for the growth of lipomas and other benign tumors in humans and the pygmy phenotype in mice as revealed by experiments conducted on the multiple aberration region. Studying the possible role of mutations in genes encoding of other architectural proteins in various human diseases is necessary.
