Woman of the woods

Article Abstract:

Former Fish and Wildlife Service Director Mollie H. Beattie has helped minimize distrust and enhance national debate on environmental conservation issues. Her childlike awe, coupled with a forestry degree and a master's degree in public administration impressed both political friends and enemies. After Beattie's death from cancer, a bill naming a portion of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in her name was introduced in Congress.

The geography of crime

Article Abstract:

Geographic profiling is a new tool in helping track where criminals might live. A detective in Canada has developed a method where computers can compare criminal activity to where criminals probably live or work. Narrowing the area police have to search increases the chance of the criminal being caught. This system is most useful when there are high numbers of suspects and many of the same kind of crime.
