A poet's task

Article Abstract:

Poets have always recognized the significance of the past and the link between archaeology and humanity that most other people do not see. Among those who have consciously used archaeology are Shelley, in 'Ozymandias,' and W.H. Auden in 'Archaeology' and 'Roman Wall Blues.' Tom Paulin, a modern Irish poet, sees his task as akin to an archaeologist's, retrieving the past as seen in traditional archaeology and blending it with a more personal variety built on individual memories and internal 'sites.'

Agatha Christie was married to an archaeologist and used archaeological themes in some of her mystery novels, including 'Death Comes as the End,' 'Death on the Nile,' and 'Murder in Mesopotamia.' Some archaeologists have also written mystery novels, including 'Murder by Burial' by Stanley Casson, 'The Cambridge Murders' and 'Welcome Death' by Glyn Daniel, and 'Selena' by Gordon R. Willey. Elizabeth Peters and Lindsay Davis stand out among current authors of archaeological mysteries.
