Birth of the chariot: excavations east of the Ural Mountains reveal traces of the first two-wheeled, high-performance vehicles

Article Abstract:

Russian archaeologists may have found the inventors of the chariot and the ancestors of the Aryans who ruled India and wrote the 'Rig Veda.' Excavations of burial sites of the Sintashta-Petrovka culture in the Russian and Kazakh steppes east of the Ural Mountains reveal striking parallels with the 'Rig Veda' and date to ca 2000-1500 BC. Signs of chariots buried in some graves suggest they may have been used before chariots were known in the Near East and Mycenaea.

The discovery of the best-preserved chariot burial ever found in U.K. by the archaeologist in northern England is discussed. Most of the chariots are found in a cluster to the east of the city of York, about thirty miles from Ferrybridge.
