Lives of girls and women: the New York School

Article Abstract:

The 1994 Green Linnet compact disc collection of Irish folk music represents a tribute to the growing influence of Irish women musicians in the genre. These contemporary releases revive Irish music from the 1960s and 1970s era. The significant contributions of female fiddlers is evident in the Green Linnet collection through the involved work of Eileen Ivers, Alison Krauss and Joanie Madden. Moreover, the collection includes biographical and historical notes underlining the importance of women instrumentalists to Irish music.

The development of Green Linnet CDs as music-historical documents

Article Abstract:

The 1994 Green Linnet compact disc collection documents a significant part of Irish music history. The contemporary collection includes music by Irish American artists rendering modern versions of originals from the 1960s and 1970s. In addition, historical and biographical information presented in the collections offer a deeper insight into the musical and folkloric foundations of this genre. As such, the collection represents a revival of interest in the highly spiritual and charged performance of Irish music from that era.
