Priniatikos Pyrgos: A primary harbor settlement and emporium in Eastern Crete

Article Abstract:

Discoveries in the early 20th century about Priniatikos Pyrgos, a coastal settlement in eastern Crete had stratified archaeological deposits ranging from the Bronze Age through to the Roman period suggesting that it was the primary harbor along the west-central coast of the Gulf of Mirabello for thousands of years. The preliminary results indicate that Priniatikos Pyrgos was probably a part of a much larger settlement that included the Kambos and Nisi Pandeleimon areas to the east and was a center of craft specialization for both ceramic and later, iron production.

Vengeful spirits and guardian deities: myth and sculpture in the Eastern Solomon Islands

Article Abstract:

The religious tradition of formerly nonliterate societies in the Eastern Solomon Islands included myths that explain the origin of things around them. Myths such as the myth of Karemanua and the myth of Waumauma are evident in altars, caskets, posts and other three-dimensional wood sculpture as well as architectural elements of sacred structures. As such, myths establish a relevant historical context as understood by the people of Eastern Solomon Islands themselves which is included in social and ritual actions at present.
